A Little Help from My Friends

Two weeks ago I wrote an email on the importance on healthy eating and physical exercise. I explained the relationship between body and soul and argued that a healthy body would support a strong soul.

After sending the article I received an email from a relative overseas that read:
So what inspired this articlle ... did you just start an intense program of healthy eating and exercise?

The honest but embarrassing answer to this question is "no" - which is the exact reason why I wrote the piece.

Everyone has their deficiencies and areas of laziness. Sometimes, after healthy reflection and soul searching, we are inspired to make changes, but still need a little push or encouragement from others. It is true that the foundation of self-growth is the inner desire to change. Without self motivation, nothing can help. No amount of influence, persuasion or cajoling will make any difference if we don't want to change ourselves. Once the will is there, however, it can be strengthened and supported by others. When we share our inspiration and resolve with our friends we are strengthened. Later on, when they remind us and enquire about our progress, we are re-motivated and re-inspired.

Our sages tell us that to be able to grow, a person needs two things - a spiritual mentor and friends. Sharing with others and taking on board constructive reminders is a strength, not a weakness. Our intrinsic goodness is not diminished or compromised by admitting our shortcomings. After all, no one is perfect. We all have strengths and weaknesses and we all compliment each other. When we inspire each other we grow, develop and improve together.

So I am committed to better nutrition and improved fitness. I am even more committed now that I have written about it for the second time. When you see me next you can ask me for a progress report, and I hope to be able to give you a positive response.
